Profile
What you consume first thing in the morning can set the tone for your entire digestive system. According to Dr Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist based at Fortis Vasant Kunj, there are three foods you should steer clear of on an empty stomach because they can disrupt gut health.
1. Citrus fruits or lemon water
Highly acidic foods—such as citrus fruits or a glass of lemon water—can irritate the sensitive lining of your stomach when consumed on an empty stomach. Dr Vatsya explains that in this state, the stomach’s acid levels are already poised to act, so adding strong acid can lead to discomfort such as acidity or gastritis.
2. Black coffee
Drinking black coffee first thing with no food in your stomach is akin to delivering an “acid shock,” says Dr Vatsya. It stimulates gastric acid production aggressively, which can result in bloating, gut irritation, or fluctuations in energy (the caffeine rush followed by a crash).
3. Spicy foods
Starting the day with a heavily spicy breakfast (for example, dishes like chole bhature, misal pav, kachori) can trigger irritation of the stomach lining and potentially lead to inflammation over time. Spicy foods are best consumed after eating something more neutral.
Better alternatives for your first meal
Rather than the above, Dr Vatsya recommends beginning your day with gut-friendly, more neutral foods. Some suggestions include soaked nuts, oats, a banana, idli with sambar, dosa with sambar, a bread omelette or two boiled eggs. These provide a gentler start for your stomach and support steadier digestion.
